Our 2020 has been on hold for… obvious reasons. Until now. Many of you are already saying “shut up and take my money”, but PLEASE PLEASE first read through the next few paragraphs and the enhanced liability waiver you’re affirming by purchasing a ticket.

On August 14, 15, 21, and 22, we’ll be taking some very small groups Floating under the best possible COVID safety protocols. If y’all can behave yourselves in the new normal, we’ll be able to continue and expand into autumn.

This will not look like the Floating Dance Parties you’re used to, sadly. We should be able to get you water, but don’t expect there to be bathroom access. There will be no Floatcheck. There will be the bare minimum of first aid supplies, so please handle yourselves. There won’t be bars, and illegal drugs and carrying open containers of alcohol remain illegal (this does however mean we can welcome 18+ participants instead of 21+). There will be multiple waves per night, starting at different locations. We won’t be on the island of Manhattan, but we’ll be within 30 minutes of Times Square by car or public transit, both at the beginning and the end of the night (though we’ll end up a ways from where we began). Those locations will only be released to ticket buyers, so make sure to tell your inbox’s filter that float@whatthefloat.com isn’t spam. Expect the event to last about an hour and a half, with no afterparty. Each wave tops out at 20 participants, and all gift certificates or volunteer tickets will be accepted. No-questions-asked refunds will be available until 24 hours before your start time. Sorry, no at the door ticket sales.

If you cannot keep your mask on, or you cannot keep six feet apart, or you cannot arrive reasonably sober and stay that way, or you cannot be respectful of the spaces through which we’ll travel… please do not buy a ticket. If we have safety or sobriety issues at any one of these events, we will have no choice but to cancel and refund all the rest. Each wave will have only one guide, to protect you from COVID, which in turn limits our ability to protect you from yourself.

August 22nd, 7:30pm
August 22nd, 10:00pm
August 28th, 7:30pm
August 28th, 10:00pm
August 29th, 7:30pm
August 29th, 10:00pm

Again, by buying a ticket you are affirming this waiver. You will be emailed your rendezvous point the week of Float. Please only buy a ticket for one wave, so everyone who wants to has a chance to Float. This event is strictly 18+. Welcome back.

On August 13th, 2011, I made a very silly thing and anonymously ordered everyone I knew to gather in a park and prepare to do something altogether foolish. Some of them showed up. Ten years later, thousands have shown up. And shown up and shown up. For years I ran these events entirely by myself, but in 2019 alone, over a hundred people helped lead and soundtrack and facilitate Floats in three different cities. It feels somehow fitting that, ten years later - nearly to the day - I’ll once again be running Float alone for only a couple dozen truly dedicated maniacs. We’ll be paying tribute to some of the most iconic moments of years past with songs from nearly Float DJ of the past decade, plus all of the brand new noise we’ve been dying to spring on you for the past nine months. Oops, it’s all showstoppers.

This year we all saw so many of our hopes and plans go up in smoke, but I do not have the words to say how excited I am to create Float anew for this very different world. I hope you’ll join me.

happy anniversary, self.
